Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is a form of treatment that helps individuals explore and address emotional, psychological, and behavioural challenges. It provides a safe and supportive environment where clients can discuss their thoughts and feelings with a trained professional.
This type of therapy focuses on understanding the underlying causes of distress, helping individuals develop coping strategies, improve relationships, and achieve personal growth. Psychotherapy can be beneficial for a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, and self-esteem concerns.
Sessions are typically tailored to meet the unique needs of each client and may involve short-term or long-term therapy, depending on the complexity of the issues being addressed. Psychotherapy is suitable for people of all ages and backgrounds
I am available to lead and supervise GPs in either 1 on 1 or small group sessions. Feel free to contact me privately for more information.
Psychosexual Therapy
What is Psychosexual Therapy?
Psychosexual therapy, also known as sex therapy, focuses on the important role that thoughts and emotions play in sexual function. It is a specialised form of counseling designed to address concerns related to sex, sexual health, and sexuality. Unlike other health professionals, psychosexual therapists undergo extensive training and education in human sexuality.
It’s important to note that psychosexual therapy sessions do not involve any touching, nudity, or explicit sexual acts. However, you may be given homework exercises to explore privately in your own time.
Who Can Benefit from Psychosexual Therapy?
Psychosexual therapy can help individuals and couples experiencing issues related to sex and sexuality. These challenges are common and can affect anyone, regardless of relationship status, age, gender, orientation, religion, disability, or cultural background. Therapy provides tools, insights, and strategies to address these issues and empower clients with new perspectives and skills.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
The number of sessions required depends on your unique concerns and situation. Some clients may find resolution in just 1 or 2 sessions, while others may benefit from 6 to 10 sessions. Long-term therapy or periodic check-ins may also be an option for ongoing support.
Do I Need a Referral to Make an Appointment?
No referral is necessary to book an appointment with Dr. Susan Barnett. However, if you have a referral, feel free to bring it to your first session.
What Should I Expect from a Psychosexual Therapy Session?
Sessions provide a safe and supportive space to discuss your concerns. Dr. Susan Barnett will carefully listen to your experiences, gather relevant information, and assess your situation to create a tailored treatment plan. This approach helps identify the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors contributing to the issue and ensures that therapy is customised to your needs.
You may be given homework exercises to complete between sessions, but you will never be asked to do anything you are uncomfortable with. Follow-up sessions will focus on reviewing progress, both during therapy and at home, to help you achieve your treatment goals.
