Psychotherapy is a form of treatment that helps individuals explore and address emotional, psychological, and behavioural challenges. It provides a safe and supportive environment where clients can discuss their thoughts and feelings with a trained professional.

This type of therapy focuses on understanding the underlying causes of distress, helping individuals develop coping strategies, improve relationships, and achieve personal growth. Psychotherapy can be beneficial for a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, and self-esteem concerns.

Sessions are typically tailored to meet the unique needs of each client and may involve short-term or long-term therapy, depending on the complexity of the issues being addressed. Psychotherapy is suitable for people of all ages and backgrounds

Psychosexual Therapy with Dr. Susan Barnett

As a GP Psychotherapist, I am passionate about providing whole-person care, recognising the deep connection between mind and body. When clients experience sexual difficulties—either individually or within a relationship—I take an integrative approach that considers both the physical and psychological aspects of sexual health. After all, our brain is our most powerful sex organ. I see any sexual issues the most common being for femailes painful sex, males erectile dysfunction, everyone changes with ageing/ medical issues, low libido, anorgasmia, for couples libido mismatch, intimacy issues.

What is Psychosexual Therapy?

Psychosexual therapy—sometimes called sex therapy—is a specialised form of counselling that supports individuals and couples in exploring and resolving concerns related to sex, sexual health, and intimacy. It recognises the essential role of thoughts, emotions, and physical health in sexual wellbeing.  As a Gp I can assess and manage physical issues as well as offer psychological therapies.

Who Can Benefit from Psychosexual Therapy?

Sexual difficulties are common and can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, orientation, relationship status, culture, religion, or disability. Psychosexual therapy offers a compassionate, evidence-informed space to address these issues, helping clients develop new insights, practical strategies, and greater confidence in their sexual relationships.

Do I Need a Referral?

No referral is needed to make an appointment with Dr. Susan Barnett. However, if you do have one, you’re welcome to bring it along to your first session.

What Should I Expect from a Session?

Sessions are conducted in a supportive and non-judgmental environment where you can speak openly about your concerns. I will work with you to gather relevant medical, relational, and emotional information, allowing us to develop a personalised treatment plan that meets your unique needs.

You may be offered exercises or strategies to try between sessions, but you’ll never be asked to do anything you’re uncomfortable with. Follow-up sessions will focus on tracking progress and adjusting the approach to ensure you are moving toward your goals.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your individual needs and the nature of the concerns. This will be discussed as part of your personalised care plan.
